Priya Jain

Hi, I’m Priya.

I used to (and still occasionally) write about books and culture for places like Salon, Slate, Bust Magazine, O: the Oprah Magazine, the New York Times Book Review, Premiere, and a whole lot of other publications. I was the Features and Books editor at Bust and taught journalism at NYU. I have two Masters degrees, in journalism and creative writing, from NYU and Stony Brook University.

For the past few years, I’ve been focusing my attention on two projects. The first is a narrative non-fiction history of my great-grandfathers and their roles in the Indian independence movement, a book for which I’ve used original archival research to tell the story of India’s freedom struggle, its various personalities and factions and their arguments for what India should be, in a way it has never been told before. The second project is more whimsical: a novel about two sisters who go on a quest involving a magical artifact, a British colonialist, a Bengali poet, two Hindu gods, and one big family secret. I can’t wait to share both projects with you soon.
